18 businesses, 30 people evacuate due to gas leak: Calgary Fire

By Nadia Moharib and Alejandro Melgar

A gas leak outside a strip mall in northeast Calgary saw 18 businesses evacuated just before 10 a.m. Tuesday.

District chief Ian Crosby said the natural gas leak happened when HVAC servicing was being done at a building at 3208 35 Street and an old shut-off valve failed.

The evacuations temporarily snarled traffic in the area.

Crosby says 30 people were checked by medics for any issues but none were transported to hospital.

He says the fact it happened outdoors on a windy day helped mitigate any issues.

No injuries have been reported.
