The Calgary Flames have signed forward Mikael Backlund to a two-year contract extension with an average annual value in the neighbourhood of $4.5 million, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports.
Backlund had one year left on a six-year, $32.1-million contract that carried a $5.35 million cap hit.
The 33-year-old Backlund had 19 goals and 37 assists for 56 points in 82 games for the Flames this season. Calgary had a disappointing 2022-23 campaign that saw the Flames miss the post-season.
The Flames drafted the Swedish native in the first round (24th overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft.
Backlund has 185 goals and 307 assists for 492 points in 908 career games with the Flames. He was named an alternate captain ahead of the 2018-19 season and has been a veteran leader for the Flames over that past few seasons.
