Albertans can book COVID-19, flu shots Oct. 10

Albertans will be able to book an appointment for the latest COVID-19 vaccine or flu shot beginning Oct. 10.

People can get the shots at an Alberta Health Services (AHS) clinic or pharmacy through the government’s vaccine booking system, by directly contacting community health clinics, or by calling 811.

The province says the first shots will be administered on Oct. 16.

However, those living in congregate care settings will be able to access vaccinations beginning on Oct. 2.

“Being immunized for influenza and COVID-19 can help protect you and your loved ones, particularly those most at risk for severe disease. Taking steps to prevent viral infections will also improve an individual’s overall health,” said Alberta Chief Medical Health Officer of Health Mark Joffe in a news release.

It comes after Health Canada gave the updated Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty vaccine for COVID-19 the green light.

It’s the second vaccine approved by the federal agency that targets the subvariant. Earlier in September, it authorized the use of Moderna’s new Spikevax vaccine.

Albertans are being encouraged to take a number of actions to limit the spread of respiratory illnesses, which include staying home when feeling sick, avoiding close contact with those who are sick, washing hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol, covering any coughs, and avoiding touching eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.

In addition, mask use is being encouraged in crowded indoor spaces to “help reduce the risk of becoming sick and help protect others from being exposed.”

Meanwhile, the province is encouraging Albertans to speak with their primary care provider if they have questions or concerns about immunizations.
