Calgary police searching for stolen puppy

Calgary police are investigating the theft of a 17-week-old Golden Retriever puppy in the northeast Monday.

Investigators say one woman has been charged with robbery, and have identified another suspect who they continue to search for.

Police are also asking for the public’s help to identify four unknown suspects believed to be involved in the theft of the dog.

On Monday, Sept. 25, just before 5 p.m., investigators say a woman was taking her dog Waverly to training classes at the Thorncliffe Greenview Community Association on Centre Street NE, when she was ambushed by a group of six people, one of which left the area with the puppy.

Police explain they believe the victim entered the community association building when she was approached by six people who swarmed her. In the commotion, the puppy was aggressively taken by one of the suspects, who then fled towards the parking lot and got into a vehicle thought to be a silver Honda CRV.

The other suspects held the woman in the building to prevent her from getting to the dog, investigators say.

She was eventually released by the group, left the building, and ran towards the vehicle, standing behind it to stop it from leaving.

According to police, one of the suspects pushed the woman out of the path of the vehicle, which then drove off with Waverly inside.

The other suspects then left the parking lot in two unknown vehicles.

Police believe one of the suspects is known to the victim and the dog may be in the possession of that suspect, who may also have resold the dog to someone unrelated to the theft.

The buyer may not be aware of the ongoing investigation.

Charges haven’t been laid as police look to find that suspect, and Waverly remains missing, according to investigators.

Police continue to look for information on the other four suspects thought to be involved and are asking for the public’s help in identifying them.

The first suspect is described as a man, approximately 30 to 40 years old, about 6’ tall, 165 pounds, with a slim build and blond shoulder-length hair. He was last seen wearing a brown jacket, grey T-shirt, blue jeans and dark-coloured shoes with white soles.

The second suspect is described as a woman, about 30 to 40 years old and 5’4″ tall, 125 pounds, with a slim build and long blond hair. She was last seen wearing a white sweater with blue writing on it, blue jeans and running shoes.

The third suspect is described as a man, approximately 50 to 60 years old, approximately 5’8″ tall, 165 pounds, with long brown hair past his shoulders, and a slight receding hairline. He was last seen wearing a burgundy long-sleeve shirt, blue jeans and running shoes.

The fourth suspect is described as a woman approximately 30 to 40 years old, approximately 5’8″ tall, 150 pounds, with long black hair and glasses. She was last seen wearing a purple sweatsuit and dark-coloured shoes.

Becky Hall, 63, of Calgary, has been charged with robbery and is next in court on Friday.

Anyone with information about the location of Waverly or the identity of the suspects is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
