Stabbing on C-Train forces evacuation into tunnel

By Phil Wood

One person is in police custody after a late night stabbing onboard a C-Train in Calgary’s southeast.

In a release, Calgary Police said the assault took place near 36 Avenue and Burnsland Road on Oct. 3, 2023.

It was there the C-Train departed the Erlton-Stampede station heading northbound at about 11 p.m.

During the incident, someone pressed the train’s help button, causing the train to stop inside the tunnel between Victoria Park and City Hall stations.

About 100 passengers were forced to evacuate into the tunnel between Victoria Park and City Hall stations, and C.P.S. said Calgary Transit stopped traffic in both directions to ensure safe passage for the evacuees.

Police said the victim in the stabbing received only minor injuries, while officers located the 26-year-old male suspect and took him into custody.

Investigators are still trying to piece together a motive, and whether the accused and the victim knew each other.

Charges are pending.
