City of Calgary looks to sell Glenmore Landing parkland

As the city of Calgary explores future housing projects, one proposal involves the sale of Glenmore Landing parkland. Tate Laycraft has more.

The City of Calgary is investigating the sale of Glenmore Landing park space with a potential housing project in mind.

But, it isn’t sitting well with some southwest residents.

According to a group called Communities for Glenmore Landing Preservation, the targeted land was designated as city park space some 40 years ago.

The proposed sale would result in the development of two parcels of land, located south and east of the Glenmore Shopping Centre.

According to Ward 11 city Coun. Kourtney Penner, developer and potential buyer RioCan would aim to buy several highrise apartments along with further commercial spaces.

“When you’re looking at an agreement that’s 40 years old, language has definitely changed and we’re really just coming to understand that there are changes that are needed in the city and this is an appropriate site to consider for additional housing,” she said. “There’s nothing ever, that precludes us from selling park lands or park spaces.”

As sales talks progress, Penner says RioCan is preparing a Land Use Housing Application.

She adds the public has until Oct. 23 to provide feedback on the potential sale.
