Police say a Calgarian out for a walk Monday evening came across a body in the Nose Creek area.
Around 7:40 p.m., the discovery was reported by someone who was walking their dog around Edmonton Trail and 41 Avenue NE.
Investigators say they have been unable to identify the body because it appeared to have been there for some time.
“There was significant decay in the body and we’re having some difficulties figuring out who they are at this point,” Staff Sgt. John Guigon told CityNews. “The medical examiner has been to the scene and they are going to try to figure out if it was natural or what the case is.
“They’ll probably have to be fingerprinted and ran through the database. The decay is significant. We’re not sure how long the body has been in the river. Just a lot of unknowns when we have this level of decay unfortunately.”
Police confirm the area was closed off for much of Monday evening as the investigation continued.
Investigators say the death is not currently considered suspicious based on the condition of the body.
“We can certainly say there was nothing obviously — well, there was no knife sticking out of them, bullet holes, anything like that,” said Guigon. “So there’s nothing suspicious upon initial (observation). It’ll be up to the coroner to determine how they died and who they are.”
