A major construction project will shut down a busy LRT station and part of the south leg of the Red Line for more than a week starting in early November.
Calgary Transit says the Victoria Park/Stampede Station and the Red Line between Chinook and City Hall/Bow Valley College stations will be closed from Friday, Nov. 24 after rush hour, through Monday, Dec. 4 before the start of rush hour, to complete work on the 17 Avenue SE extension and the station rebuild.
These closures will be accommodated with shuttle service.
Calgarians can also expect lane closures on northbound Macleod Trail between 25 Avenue and 12 Avenue SE, detoured pedestrian access onto Stampede Park from Macleod Trail, and 24-hour construction activity at the station.
“Building a project of this scale and significance in a constrained right-of-way – between the BMO Centre and Macleod Trail – in the heart of one of the most active destinations for entertainment and cultural programming in the city is very complex,” said Kate Thompson, President and CEO of the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) in a statement.
“[We] have ultimately determined that the nine-day shutdown of the station and part of the Red Line is the best option to keep this project on schedule, to reduce the risk of unplanned transit disruption, and to mitigate longer-term impacts to the people living, working and playing in downtown Calgary,” she explained.
Full details on replacement shuttle routes, traffic and pedestrian detours will be available in the coming weeks, the city says.
When service resumes Dec. 4, Calgary Transit says riders will board and exit the train from the new station.
Additional construction on the station, including hardscaping, landscaping, and integration to the 17 Avenue SE extension will be completed through early 2024, according to the city.
The extension will be completed early next year, and the project will be mostly complete in alignment with the BMO Centre expansion for Stampede 2024.
