ASIRT concludes investigation into February shooting in Calgary’s northwest

The province’s police watchdog says a man shot by Calgary police earlier this year told them he had wanted to commit suicide by cop.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has concluded its investigation into the shooting back in February in Highwood, finding the officer’s use of force was justified and reasonable.

Police had been called tot he northwest neighbourhood after a man drove a cube van into a house.

When they arrived, one officer saw what the thought was a gun in the driver’s hand and opened fire.

The suspect was hit but didn’t surrender to officers for another hour, after the tactical team arrived.

The man survived, and told ASIRT he fired an airsoft BB gun at officers in an effort to get them to fire back.
