5 children, 1 adult injured in school bus rollover on Highway 2A

Five students and one adult were left with non-life threatening injuries after a school bus rolled on Highway 2A Monday morning.

Alberta EMS confirmed to CityNews Monday afternoon that six people were taken to hospital following the incident.

Police say at the time of the crash, nine students, two teachers, and the driver of the bus were aboard at the time of the collision.

According to a spokesperson, one youth with non life threatening injuries was taken to the Foothills Medical Centre, one youth with non life threatening injuries was taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital, three youth with non life threatening injuries were taken to the Didsbury Health Centre, and one adult with non life threatening injuries was taken to the Peter Lougheed Centre.

All transports were done via ground ambulance, according to EMS.

This comes as many parts of Alberta experienced the first snowfall of the season, but not before some freezing showers.

The Didsbury RCMP says at just after 10:20 a.m., an officer came across a school bus that had rolled over on Highway 2A at Township Road 320.

Investigators have closed this portion of Highway 2A, between Township Road 320 and 314 is closed.

Traffic can’t get through the area at this time, and drivers are asked to take an alternate route.

RCMP were still on scene of the incident as of 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon and said the road will likely be closed for three to four hours.

Police have been responding to multiple collisions in the area, including on Highway 2, Monday due to poor road conditions.

Albertans woke up to freezing rain ahead of a predicted snowfall that Environment and Climate Change Canada says could see accumulations of 10 to 15 centimetres before Tuesday.

Alberta RCMP said preliminary findings suggest road conditions were a factor in the collision.
