Cochrane ends local state of local emergency

A state of local emergency (SOLE) first announced in Cochrane earlier this week due to a broken water pipe, has ended Thursday, the town said.

Crews have now begun repairing a water line break five days after it was struck by a construction crew, wreaking havoc on the Bow River and leaving some residents without potable water.

In an update Thursday, town officials say water conservation efforts have “yielded positive results.”

Water was being trucked in from the nearby community of Harmony and the city of Calgary to ensure the flow to the community could continue.

On Tuesday, residents of Cochrane’s Riverside Place were informed they would be without water for at least 48 hours while crews attempted to resolve the situation.

However, on Thursday, the town said water hauling had stopped, due to positive improvements in reservoir levels.

With that, residents are still encouraged to conserve water, but are now permitted to take quick showers, do emergency loads of laundry and wash dishes as a result of reservoir improvements.

The town said that late Wednesday night, water was restored to local hotels and the GM dealership.

Partial road closures on West Rock Road and West Side Drive will remain in effect throughout Thursday to complete repair work, and the closure on Riverview Drive will continue to be in place, according to the town.

The partial road closure of Gleneagles Drive East from HWY 1A has been lifted as of Thursday morning.
