600 Calgary homes affected by water main breaks

Nearly 600 homes are affected by water main breaks in Calgary, which started Saturday.

The affected communities include the Beltline, Hilhurst, Elboya, and Edgemont. Five hundred of those homes are in the Beltline area on 7 Street and 15 Avenue SW.

The water main break in the community of Edgemont currently affects 29 homes along Edenstone Road. A reported 41 homes on 1630 Broadview Road NW in Hillhurst are affected.

Water wagons have been ordered for those areas, with the City of Calgary noting investigations are underway and a repair is underway in Hillhurst.

The city says under normal circumstances, water main breaks are repaired and water is back on within 48 hours.

“We prioritize breaks based on factors such as the risk of property damage, impact to critical facilities (like hospitals or schools) and the number of customers out of water,” the city website reads.

“The time it takes to fix a break varies due to several factors including digging in frozen ground, frost depth, how quickly the break can be located, the size of the break and the current weather conditions.”

It has not been said what caused the situation, but it is not an uncommon occurrence with the freeze/thaw cycles in Calgary.

More information on water outages and main breaks can be found online.
