How to mark Remembrance Day in Calgary

Several events are taking place across Calgary Saturday to mark Remembrance Day.

The city says ceremonies are taking place at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, King’s Own Calgary Regiment, Studio Bell, the Field of Crosses, The Hangar Flight Museum, The Military Museums, and the Canadian Pacific Memorial.

Calgary Transit will be operating on a Saturday level of service and all veterans wearing uniforms or with Veteran identification cards are eligible to ride for free, as well as accompanying family members.

The Red Line will be closed between Lions Park Station and downtown starting Saturday morning until the early hours of Monday, Nov. 13.

Shuttle buses will replace northbound train service to all stations from 7 Street Station to Lions Park Station and southbound to all stations from Lions Park Station to 8 Street Station.

There will also be several road closures and detours in place to accommodate Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Field of Crosses (Nov. 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.)

  • Memorial Drive N will be closed between 4 Street N.E. and 10 Street N.W. with local traffic to Sunnyside maintained
  • The lower deck of the Centre Street Bridge will be closed
  • Please watch for increased pedestrian volume in the area
  • CPS will be on-site directing traffic at all closure points

Calgary Highlanders Remembrance Day parade (Central Memorial Park) (Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.)

  • 12 Avenue S.W. will be closed between 4 Street S.W. and 2 Street S.W.
  • 13 Avenue S.W. will be closed between 5 Street S.W. and 2 Street S.W. with access to the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre maintained
  • 4 Street S.W. will be closed between 12 Avenue S.W. and 13 Avenue S.W.
  • Please watch for increased pedestrian volume in the area
  • CPS will be on-site directing traffic at all closure points

Parking will be free in on-street ParkPlus zones on Saturday, while weekend rates will apply at all Calgary Parking surface lots and parkades.

Veterans displaying a valid Alberta registered Veterans’ license plate will be able to park for free at city lots and parkades.

City landfills will operate on regular hours while indoor pools and fitness centres, the Village Square Leisure Centre, arenas, arts centres, and the Calgary Soccer Centre will be closed.

However, the city says the Southland Leisure Centre will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a free public skate will be offered at Murray Copot Arena and Rose Kohn/Jimmie Condon Arenas from 1-2:15 p.m.

A paid public skate will be offered at Village Square Leisure Centre’s Arena #1 from 1-2:15 p.m. on Saturday as well.
