Calgary police search for home break-and-enter suspect

Calgary police are asking for help to identify a woman they believe broke into a home in the northwest in September.

Investigators say shortly after 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, a person or group of people broke into a vehicle parked at Edgemont Athletic, on Edgemont Boulevard NW, and stole a garage door opener and registration information.

The people then went to the address on the registration, on Varsity Estates Terrace NW, where they went into the house and stole money and jewelry.

A short time later, police say the woman who owned the vehicle noticed her garage door opener and registration missing from the vehicle and got a notification on her phone that her garage door had been activated,

According to police, she called 911 to report a possible break-in and let her teenage daughter, who was home at the time, know what was happening.

While at home, the teen looked out the window and saw one person enter the home.

Police said when she thought the person had left, the girl called 911 and went to check the house.

But, while she was on the phone with the operator, an unknown woman came into the home through the back door, saw the teen, and ran out of the house, according to police.

When police arrived at the NW home around 5:40 p.m., the suspect or suspects had already left.

Investigators say all avenues to identify the suspect have now been exhausted and now they need help from the public.

The woman is described as around 50 years old with a heavy build and dark hair. Police say at the time of the incident, she was wearing a grey hoodie.

No security camera footage was available, but police say the witness has worked with them to create a composite sketch.
