Dense fog has blanketed Calgary and many parts of southern Alberta Wednesday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a fog advisory for the city around 4:40 a.m. and again at 12:30 p.m.
The fog is leading to “near zero visibility” in some areas, ECCC says.
Conditions are expected to slowly improve through the day, though it is likely the fog will return Wednesday evening in some places.
“The warm air is filtering across the Rockies, but that’s trapping some colder air in at the surface, creating a bit of an inversion, and the fog — that’s the result — the fog is going to be around through the morning and ice fog in spots,” CityNews meteorologist Michael Kuss explained. “As we hit the afternoon, we’re still going to see cloud cover, but at least the the fog is going to lift through the day.”
Travel is expected to be hazardous due to poor visibility in some areas.
Drivers are advised to be prepared for low visibility, and the ECCC says that if it becomes difficult to see while driving, motorists should slow down, watch for tail lights ahead, and be prepared to stop.
Some areas of Calgary are seeing light accumulations of snow, the city said Wednesday afternoon, particularly on the west and north ends of the city.
Crews are applying pickle mix (salt and sanding chips) to the roads to improve traction, the city says, though it is reminding drivers to prepare for winter conditions before they head out.
Environment Canada’s warning also includes Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds, and Sundre.
