Calgary police warn of warm-up auto thefts, launch Operation Cold Start

Calgary police are joining other law enforcement agencies in cracking down on crime through the Operation Cold Start campaign.

The crime prevention initiative works to address the high number of warm-up auto thefts that happen during the winter, CPS says.

From Oct. 26, 2023 to Jan. 4, 2024, police received 114 reports of vehicles that were stolen while they were running.

While any vehicle left running can be a target for thieves, police say work vehicles (including delivery vehicles) and pickup trucks are among the most commonly stolen vehicles in the city

The CPS is reminding Calgarians to use a remote starter or stay with their vehicle as it warms up, never leave their keys — either the primary or spare pair, inside the vehicle, use a steering wheel lock, and to always keep their vehicle locked.

Children, pets, and valuable or sentimental items should never be left in vehicles, police add.

Items police say should never be left in a vehicle include cellphones, computers or tablets, jewelry, clothing, cigarettes and lighters, shopping packages, garage door openers, and documents with addresses or personal information, such as driver’s licences, vehicle registration documents and proof of insurance.

Anyone who witnesses a crime in progress should call 911.

To report suspicious activity or a crime after it has happened, contact Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or anonymously tip through CrimeStoppers.
