Home in Calgary’s Auburn Bay ‘destroyed’ in fire

Two adults and one child escaped without injuries after their home in Calgary’s Auburn Bay community went up in flames Thursday afternoon.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says it received calls around 4 p.m. reporting a blaze at house on Auburn Bay Boulevard SE.

When crews arrived on scene, the incident was upgraded to a second alarm because of the volume of fire and the fact flames had already spread to a neighbouring house.

As to not hamper firefighting efforts, a third alarm was called to bring more resources to the scene, CFD says.

This allowed firefighters to rehab and warm up without slowing down the fight against the blaze.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, but the house where the fire started was completely destroyed, according to Calgary fire.

The neighbouring house was also significantly damaged, as were two vehicles.

Calgary Transit supplied buses to be used as warming stations during the extreme cold and staff at St. Gianna School stayed late and allowed emergency responders to use the school to warm up.

Investigators are working to find the origin and cause of the fire, especially before crews arrived.

CFD says fires can happen at any time of the day or night and can grow very quickly.

It recommends having a home escape plan, which has the layout of your home, the escape routes that should be used, and where to meet once outside.
