Mountie not criminally responsible in arrest that led to injuries for physician: ASIRT

By Darren Rathwell

An RCMP officer in Fort McMurray is cleared of any wrongdoing in the arrest of a physician at a check stop that caused injuries.

Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) investigated the arrest that took place in December of 2019.

A notice from ASIRT says the doctor was attempting to bypass a check stop so he could get to the hospital for an urgent procedure, and believed he had been cleared to pass.

But instead, the doctor was arrested after trying to leave the area.

While being placed in the back of a police car, he was hit by the car door and suffered a painful elbow injury.

ASIRT says no criminal offences were committed during the arrest.
