Former Stampeders defensive back Kelly Malveaux dead at 47

The Calgary Stampeders are mourning the death of a former player for the second time this week.

The organization on Friday announced that defensive back Kelly Malveaux had died. He was 47.

Bruce Covernton, a former offensive lineman who won two Grey Cups with the Calgary Stampeders, died Tuesday. He was 57.

“This has been a very difficult time for the Stampeders family and we are deeply saddened by the loss of another member who is gone far too soon,” Stampeders president Jay McNeil said in a statement. “Kelly was an important member of our Grey Cup team in 2001 and he was a wonderful teammate. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends.”

Malveaux, from California, played three of his 10 CFL seasons with the Stamps, and appeared in 49 regular season games for the Red and White from 2001-03.

He was a member of Calgary’s 2001 Grey Cup championship squad and played an important role in that year’s West final victory over Edmonton with a pair of interceptions, the organization says.

Malveaux also played for Saskatchewan, Montreal, Winnipeg and Edmonton in the CFL, with Amsterdam in NFL Europe, with Orlando in the XFL and with Sacramento in the United Football League.

The University of Arizona product played a total of 156 CFL games and registered 490 tackles and 17 interceptions. Malveaux was a CFL division all-star in 2004 and 2008.
