Cold temperatures, snow blowing into Calgary this week

The weather in Calgary has been all over the place in recent months, and that isn’t stopping now.

Winter-like conditions are blowing into the city this week, after unseasonably warm temperatures.

Paul Silvestro with Environment and Climate Change Canada says temperatures will begin to plunge Monday afternoon.

“The Calgary area right now has pretty gusty northerly winds and that is kind of funneling down the colder air from northern Alberta,” he explained. “So, the warmer temperatures you had overnight and even yesterday are in the past and unfortunately today, your temperatures will be falling steadily.”

Calgary could see some brief relief on Wednesday, returning to the positives, before the cold air settles in once again on Thursday.

There are currently no alerts in place for Calgary, however, but it sounds like more snow may be on the way.

“It doesn’t look like a whole lot, just a couple of centimetres are expected,” Silvestro said. “Heading late in the week, it looks like there’s another system that could develop in southern Alberta which will bring more snow.

“Right now, there’s a little bit of uncertainty as it close to the end of the week, but snow definitely seems likely.”

But, elsewhere in the province is a different story.

There are snowfall warnings and two highway alerts issued by Environment Canada, for Banff National Park and Lake Louise.

Parts of the mountains have already received around 15 centimetres, and could get another 15 by the end of Monday.

Farther north, around Edmonton, some places have seen over 25 centimetres.
