Calgary man charged in random altercations that ended in being shot by police

Calgary police have laid charges against a man in an incident that led to him being shot by an officer last week.

Just before 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 29, police received multiple calls from residents in Temple, reporting that a man with a gun was acting erratically, including allegedly committing assault and carjacking.

Investigators believe between 6:50 p.m. and 7 p.m. that evening the man had three altercations with different people or groups of people in the area near Temple Drive NE, while showing an imitation firearm.

In the first incident, it was reported that a woman was parking her car near her home in the 6900 block of Temple Drive NE, when a man approached her and allegedly pointed a gun at her. Police say she was able to get in her house and wasn’t hurt.

Police say in the second incident, two men were standing outside a home on Templebow Way NE, while a third man, along with his child and mother, sat inside a vehicle that was parked nearby. Investigators believe the same man from the first incident approached the two men standing outside and allegedly pointed a gun at one of them, while demanding the keys to the vehicle. When the pair told the man they didn’t have the keys, police say the man hit the gun against the window of the vehicle before leaving the area.

In the third incident, police say a man was walking from his home to his vehicle that was parked near Temple Drive NE, when it’s believed the same man from the other incidents approached him and demanded the keys to his car. The victim turned to walk away and was hit with an object, believed to be a fake gun. Police say the man then demanded the victim’s keys, and when the victim said he didn’t have them, the suspect hit the man with the imitation gun. However, investigators say the victim was able to run away and call 911.

Police say the incident appear to be random, and none of the victims are believed to have known the suspect.

At about 7 p.m. officers arrived to Temple Drive and 58 Street NE where they found the suspect. An officer shot the man in the leg before he was taken into custody. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators recovered a handgun-style pellet gun from the scene.

The Alberta Serious Incident Responde Team (ASIRT) continues to investigate the circumstances that led up to the officer shooting the suspect.

As a result of the initial 911 calls, police have charged 36-year-old Akol Acuil Piok, has been charged with three counts of robbery, two counts of assault with a weapon, and two counts of failure to comply with a probation order. He is set to appear in court on Monday, March 4.

CPS says addressing gun violence in the city continues to be a priority.
