Kananaskis avalanche kills 19-year-old from Kelowna

The RCMP in Canmore say a 19-year-old man from Kelowna is dead after an avalanche in Kananaskis over the weekend.

Police say just before 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, they received a report of an avalanche east of the Mount Engadine Lodge on Tower Peak in Kananaskis.

An investigation showed that around 1 p.m., two men were skiing in the back country when an avalanche happened. One of the men was able to escape by digging himself out of the snow, however, the other man was buried.

On Monday, around 9:45 a.m., Canmore RCMP, with the help of Kananaskis Mountain Rescue, recovered and retrieved the body of the missing man.

Kananaskis Mountain Rescue is recommending outdoor enthusiasts check the Avalanche Canada website avalanche.ca for weather and terrain conditions before undertaking any winter activities in the backcountry.
