Calgary Fire responds to three blazes Wednesday

Calgary Fire crews were kept busy Wednesday, responding to three blazes around the city in a number of hours.

Battalion Chief Scott Cowan says crews were dispatched just after 5:30 p.m. to an industrial fire along 58 Avenue in the city’s southeast.

“It was a plastic recycling facility and there was some fire in some machinery there,” he said. “Workers were all safely evacuated. Crews did an agressive fire attack, knocked the fire down and then spent quite a whitle doing overhaul in the machinery, making sure the fire was all out.”

Workers were able to return once smoke was ventilated from the building, using one of the Calgary Fire Department’s (CFD) large industrial fans.

Around the same time, Cowan says firefighters responded to a blaze that completely destroyed a detached garage along 107 Avenue southwest.

No injuries were reported in either situation.

However, one person has been made homeless following a house fire in the city’s northwest.

Emergency crews were called to Varsity around 7 p.m. to a home along 37 Street NW after neighbours spotted fire coming from the basement.

Flames were quickly extinguished, and no one was home at the tiime of the fire.

However, the house has been deemed a loss due to extensive fire and smoke damage.
