Tuesday might be the first official day of spring, but winter in Calgary is far from over.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for the city, saying a “significant” change in weather is coming later in the week.
It adds that cooler temperatures are ahead, and Calgary could see 15 to 25 centimetres of snow.
The snow is going to be from the north, essentially. It moves across the Elbow, Red Deer region, and then pushes south into the Calgary region,” explained Alysa Peterson with the ECCC.
On Tuesday, a cold front is expected to sweep through southern Alberta, according to the ECCC, and snowfall will intensify on Wednesday and continue until early Friday morning.
Over 48 hours, snowfall totals of 15 to 25 centimetres are expected for parts of western and southern Alberta, and high amounts are possible over the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.
Snowfall warnings may be required for some regions, the ECCC says.
Peterson explains it’s not unusual for snow to continue well into the spring months.
“Surprisingly snowfall in Calgary, the snowiest months of the year are March, April, even May sometimes can a decent amount of snow,” she said.
For those needing to be on the roads Wednesday morning, Peterson advises preparation.
“Make sure people leave early, make sure you have your snowbrush in your car and be prepared to potentially have some issues on the roads,” she said
