More snow on the way for Calgary after brief taste of spring

A taste of Spring on Monday with temperatures expected to be in the mid to high teens on Tuesday. But we could see a return of winter weather on Thursday and Friday.

Calgarians can enjoy a brief taste of spring this week, before winter roars its ugly head once again.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement ahead of a “significant change in weather” this week that could bring up to 30 centimetres of snow.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is forecasting a high of 12°C for Monday, and temperatures in the mid-to-high teens through to Wednesday.

“The start of the week will be nice and warm, melting things down a little bit, but it’s relatively short-lived,” explains CityNews meteorologist Michael Kuss. “Remember, normal highs this time of year are nine and 10 degrees, and we’ll be a little bit above that [on Monday], into the mid teens Tuesday, but the risk of snow moves back in toward the end of the week.”

Kuss says if you felt March was harsh, you’re not alone.

“Temperatures were cold, almost three degrees below average and it was snowy — 68.4 centimetres of snow this past March, the snowiest since 1998,” he said.

While that snow from last month’s storm is likely to melt away the next few days, it’ll be back this weekend.

‘Multi-day snow event’ for Calgary

Environment Canada’s special weather statement says the springlike conditions on Tuesday will be followed up quicky by snow.

“Snow will begin Tuesday night along the northern foothills and progress southward on Wednesday,” reads the special weather statement. “Snow will continue on Wednesday, eventually spreading eastward towards the Saskatchewan border on Thursday.”

The snow is expected to wrap up on Friday, but not before 10 to 30 centimetres of snowfall for areas along the foothills and mountain parks.

Areas east of Highway 2 can expect five to 10 centimetres.
