A police officer is in hospital and a dog is dead after an interaction at an encampment near 50 Avenue and Macleod Trail.

Calgary police say officers were called to an encampment around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday that was set up around a motorhome on 50 Avenue east of Macleod.

When officers arrived, one was attacked and bitten by a dog, according to police. The officer shot the dog in order to stop the attack.

The dog died at the scene.

“Police are continuing to work with our partners at the City of Calgary Bylaw Services to investigate this incident,” reads a release from police.

CPS says the injured officer was taken to hospital as a result of the dog attack.

Alberta’s police watchdog, Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), says they will not be investigating the incident.
