A brand new school in Calgary’s northeast is already getting set for portables to be installed.

It opened a year ago, but there was finally an official “grand opening” at Prairie Sky School in the Skyview Ranch neighbourhood on Friday. The celebratory event featured speeches and student performances.

The kindergarten to grade nine school is already full and Calgary Board of Education (CBE) trustee Marilyn Denis says they are planning to bring in portables.

“We are always advocating for additional learning spaces,” she says, adding the CBE is currently experiencing 40-year record enrolment growth.

Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says the growth is happening at school boards across the province.

“We are seeing significant growth, of not just students, but people moving to Alberta,” he says. “They are families and that does create pressure on enrolment.”

He says they are working with boards on where new school are needed.

The CBE is planning another event to celebrate the opening of North Trail High School in Coventry Hills on Apr. 26. The school has been open since Sept. 2023 and serves the communities of Coventry Hills, Country Hills, Country Hills Village, Harvest Hills, Panorama Hills and Hidden Valley.
