Calgary man wanted in 2022 crash, shooting among Canada’s most wanted

CrimeStoppers is offering a hefty reward for information leading to the arrest of a man accused of manslaughter and attempted murder in Calgary almost two years ago.

Members of Toronto police, CrimeStoppers, and the BOLO Program spoke at a press conference Tuesday morning, presenting an updated list of Canada’s top 25 fugitives.

One of the individuals on that list is 31-year-old Calgarian Talal Amer.

On Tuesday, May 10, 2022, shortly after 11 p.m., Calgary police received reports of two vehicles speeding and driving erratically on 36 Street SE in Forest Lawn.

Several houses in the area were also hit by gunfire, investigators say.

A short time later, first responders were called to the scene of a major accident involving several vehicles at the intersection of 36 Street SE and 17 Avenue SE.

That is where 40-year-old mom of five Angela McKenzie was in her Dodge Caravan waiting to make a left turn, and was hit by another vehicle driving at high speed.

She was declared dead at the scene.

Police say McKenzie’s kids were left orphaned as their dad had died just a few months earlier.

She was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

At the scene, first responders found a man who had been shot. He was taken to hospital, treated for his injuries, and survived.

An investigation by Calgary police determined the Amer was responsible for the series of events.

Police say Amer fired multiple rounds at another driver during a high-speed car chase, trying to kill him. He fled the scene, according to investigators, driving over 150 kilometres per hour in a 50 kilometres per hour zone.

Amer allegedly hit McKenzie’s car, and then, uninjured, left the scene on foot.

He is wanted on Canada-wide warrants for manslaughter, attempted murder, and several gun-related crimes.

Police say he is a dangerous and unpredictable man with a lengthy criminal record and ties to organized crime.

In 2016, Amer was charged with six counts of attempted murder after a 2015 bloody gang street war, according to investigators. He was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to lesser charges.

According to police, his sentence ended five days before the events that left McKenzie dead.

Amer is 5’11” tall and 230 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. He may also have facial hair or a beard, and has the fingertip of his right pinky finger amputated.

Police believe he could be in Alberta, B.C., or elsewhere in Canada, but he has strong ties to Calgary.

A $50,000 reward is being offered by CrimeStoppers for any information leading to the arrest of Amer. The reward is only available until Dec. 3, 2024, but the tipster will have one year from the date of arrest to claim the reward.

Anyone with information on Amer’s location is asked to contact CrimeStoppers.
