Calgary high school briefly locked down after false claims of person with gun

A high school in southeast Calgary was briefly locked down on Thursday after false claims of someone with a gun inside the school.

Calgary police say officers were called to Lord Beaverbrook High School around 12 p.m. after a student told staff a firearm was pointed at them.

The school went into full lockdown while police investigated. A short time later the student admitted to school staff about making up the incident with the gun, according to police.

Police cleared the school and the lockdown was lifted before 12:30 p.m.

The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) confirms to CityNews that students were kept indoors for around 20 minutes during the investigation.

“I want you to know that the safety and security of students is our top priority, and the steps taken today were according to the school’s emergency response plans,” reads a statement from CBE.

One parent tells CityNews they received the same message in an email from the school’s principal around 12:45 p.m.

CBE says the rest of the school day will progress as usual.
