Hot, sunny weather forecast for Calgary this weekend

It’s been a long time coming — Calgary is set to see hot and sunny temperatures this weekend but with that, worries about spring wildfires rise.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says we’re in for 27 C on Friday with a 20 to 40 km/h wind and a UV index of seven, or high.

A mainly sunny Saturday is also on tap, with the weather agency calling for a a high of 25 C and a UV index of 8.

Sunday will be 26 C and sunny, before rain descends onto the city on Monday.

Friday has the possibility of breaking records if the mercury inches up just over the forecasted high.

ECCC says the highest recorded temperature on May 10 was in 1906 when it hit 27.8 C.

The coldest temperature seen on this day was -12.2 C

Though many are likely excited to bask in the sunshine, provincial wildfire officials are warning Albertans to be mindful of their activities as the weather warms up.

“We have had some much needed rain and even snow in some parts of this province. But, this is the point in the season where things are about to change,” Alberta Wildfire Unit information manager, Christie Tucker, explained in an update Thursday. “With temperatures warming rapidly over the next couple of days we’re about to see a spike in wildfire danger.”

Experts stress importance of skin protection

As the sun starts to shine, experts are advising Calgarians to take precautions to protect themselves.

“Some people feel that a sunburn is necessary for a tan, but a sunburn is an indication of damage to skin from the sun, which can happen in any conditions,” dermatologist Dr. John Arlett explained. “Consistency is the important part; putting on your sunscreen regularly, choosing to stay in the shade as opposed to standing directly in the sun.

“Those are the things that are important to us.”
