A young girl is dead after a serious crash on a highway north of Edmonton on Tuesday evening.
RCMP say officers responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 2, near Township Road 602, northeast of Westlock.
Investigators believe a sedan and an SUV collided head-on. Two people from each vehicle were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
A 5-year-old girl has since been pronounced dead. RCMP have no status update on the injuries of the other three people.
Mounties says members of the public who arrived at the scene provided aid and CPR while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.
“The Westlock RCMP would like to thank them for their assistance and the courage and commitment they showed for their fellow Albertans,” reads a police release.
Police say there will be a subsequent update once more information becomes available.
“Alberta RCMP’s thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased in these difficult times,” say police in a statement, adding that they urge the public to respect the family’s privacy.
The investigation is ongoing.
