May Long Weekend: Calgary forecast and what’s open and closed

Rain and clouds are dominating the forecast over the May long weekend and Calgarians heading out of town are embracing the damp and grey camping and hiking conditions. Margot Rubin reports.

Calgarians are used to braving all the elements for the unofficial start of summer, but what exactly should people be gearing up for this May long weekend.

Snow actually fell in parts of the province early Friday and there is more wet stuff on the way.

CityNews 660 meteorologist Kevin Stanfield says wind gusts will be coupled with some showers throughout the day Friday, with the possibility of more scattered showers on Saturday and Sunday.

Friday will see a high near 10 C and the daytime highs should hover around the mid-to-low teens for the rest of the long weekend. The city will likely still see it’s share of sunny breaks on Saturday and Sunday.

The extended forecast for Calgary and latest weather updates can be found here.

The May long weekend also marks the start of camping season in Alberta and Carol Henke with the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) is out with some reminders for those looking to experience the great outdoors.

She says it all starts with checking for fire bans and advisories.

“If you can’t have a campfire due to the higher fire risk, then you need to bring alternative cooking and heating appliance with you,” she says.

Information on Alberta fire restrictions and advisories can be found here.

Weekend warriors will likely be getting a head start leaving the city as early as Thursday. Listen to CityNews 660 for the latest traffic updates every 10 minutes.
