Calgary theatre company reeling after vandals cause thousands in damage

A theatre company in Calgary’s northwest has once again been the target of vandalism, putting the non-profit group out thousands of dollars.

A Calgary theatre company is asking for support from the community after suffering what it calls “senseless” acts of vandalism.

StoryBook Theatre in Beddington Heights says over the last few weeks, it has been subject to theft and vandalism totalling more than $20,000.

The most recent incident, on Tuesday, May 21, saw a person wearing a mask throw a large rock at the building, shattering the back door, as shown in surveillance video posted by the company.

StoryBook claims this is the third time its doors have been destroyed through “intentional vandalism” in the last few months.

It says two large windows on the building’s upper floor were also shattered by vandals and three laptops were stolen from the office.

“StoryBook strives to provide a safe space for all of our volunteers, performers, production team, and patrons,” the company wrote on its website. “We are proud to be a part of the Beddington community.

“We are committed to providing enriching experiences for all Calgarians and their families.”

The volunteer-driven performing arts organization says these unexpected costs are significantly impacting the ongoing effort to recover post-pandemic.

Those who are able are being asked to make a donation toward the StoryBook Theatre damage fund.
