A teenager is dead after being struck by a train in northwest Calgary.
Emergency crews were called to a rail bridge over the Bow River east of 85 Street NW in Bowness around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday after reports of someone being hit by a freight train.
Calgary Fire tells CityNews three teens were on the track when a CPKC train was approaching from the west. Two teens were able to get off the bridge to avoid the train, but the third was hit.
Fire crews had to retrieve the victim from a lagoon-area below the bridge and bring them to waiting paramedics.
The teen that was struck was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition where they later died of their injuries. Witnesses described the person struck as a young male.
Carol Henke with the fire department says the technical rescue team responded in case extrication was necessary.
“The rescue team was not needed, there was no entrapment,” Henke said.
Area residents say the rail bridge the group was on is a common spot for people to jump into the river below. Officials have not said why the group was on the tracks.
CPKC employees remained on scene to assist with the investigation. Calgary police say they have concluded their investigation, calling it a non-criminal incident.
