Pilot, 65, dead in glider crash south of Calgary: RCMP

Mounties are investigating a glider crash south of Calgary that left one person dead.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Highway 7 and 112 Street west of Foothills County near Diamond Valley and Okotoks around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday for reports of a crash involving a “non-motorized aircraft glider aircraft” in a field.

RCMP, EMS, and fire crews attended the scene where they found the glider and the pilot.

The pilot, a 65-year-old man from Calgary, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say witnesses described seeing the aircraft in distress before the pilot jumped out in an effort to avoid the collision. RCMP believe his parachute did not eject.

There is no word on the cause of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing and being lead, in part, by Transport Canada.
