Motorcyclist in critical condition after colliding with van in SE Calgary

A portion of Barlow Trail has reopened after a serious collision between a van and a motorcycle on Friday morning that left one person fighting for their life.

Emergency crews responded to the crash around 10:45 a.m. on Barlow Trail near 66 Avenue SE.

Police say a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle was travelling southbound in the left lane of Barlow approaching 66 Avenue when a 2009 Chevrolet Express was getting ready to turn from 66 Avenue northbound onto Barlow.

Investigators say the van entered the path of the motorcycle at the intersection. The motorcycle tried to brake but crashed into the driver-side door of the van.

The motorcyclist, a man in his 30s, was thrown from the bike and landed on the road. He was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition.

The driver of the van, a woman in her 40s, remained at the scene until emergency crews arrived.

Investigators say high speed or impairment are not believed to be factors in the crash.

Barlow was closed in both directions between 61 Avenue and 72 Avenue SE for several hours. The road reopened around 2:45 p.m.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing. Anyone with dashcam footage is being asked to contact police.
