Calgary business steps in to help Bowness residents in wake of water break

While the northwest Calgary community of Bowness battles with access to drinkable water due to a major water main break, some Good Samaritans are doing their bit to ease the situation. Phoenix Phillips reports.

Just in time: hearing that Bowness residents, including senior centres, are under a boil water advisory, one Calgary business from across town took action, loading up their truck with water and delivering it to the drop-off centre at the Bowness Community Centre.

“They said, ‘Could you use a thousand or so cans of water?’ and we said, ‘Absolutely, we’re down to our last case at the community association,'” said a Bowness Community Association Volunteer named Logan.

This, in response to a severe water main break affecting the water supply to nearby residents.

“It is a need, and it’s something that we can’t survive without, obviously, and we are in a position where we can share what we have. So, why not,” said North Water CEO Saawan Logan.

While CityNews was speaking to another organization in Bowness, the conversation was interrupted by a delivery of water from an anonymous business, which doesn’t surprise the North Water CEO.

“I think this is how we as a community can come together,” she said. We started the week of COVID, when we launched, and the support from the community around us — the city, the little suburbs — the entire country came together to help a small business like us, and now it’s our turn to give back.”

For those in need, drinkable water in the Bowness community is still available.

“Grab a few flats, bring it to the lobby of your building. If you are in dire need of water and aren’t able to access it, please get in contact with us and we do have volunteers who are willing and able to get that water to you in the community,” the volunteer, Logan, said.
