Heavy, wet snow expected in Banff, Canmore this weekend

Calgarians may want to pack some winter gear if they plan on heading to the mountains over the Father’s Day weekend.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a special weather statement Friday afternoon warning of “heavy” and “wet” snow in the Rockies beginning Saturday and continuing through Sunday.

The statement covers Kananaskis, Canmore, and Banff and Jasper national parks.

“Snow is expected over higher elevations this weekend,” the weather agency says. “Rain is expected at valley bottom while higher elevations will likely see accumulating snow.”

ECCC says snowfall amounts will vary but most areas under the advisory can expect 5 to 15 centimetres by Sunday Night.

The agency warns of rapidly changing and deteriorating conditions.
