Calgary man allegedly targeted newcomers, lured them into sex trade

Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) says a Calgary man allegedly targeted newcomers to Canada and lured them into the sex trade.

The agency’s human trafficking unit found and arrested Reginald Kwame Boakye on Tuesday with the help of Airdrie RCMP and the Calgary Police Officer (CPS).

ALERT says the 31-year-old man is charged with numerous crimes related to trafficking in persons, advertising sexual services, procuring, and several gun charges.

When he was arrested, Boakye was carrying a loaded handgun and ammunition. He has a lifetime prohibition on owning guns stemming from previous convictions.

Investigators say the man allegedly targeted young women and vulnerable newcomers to Canada, and lured them into the sex trade through manipulation, grooming, and coercion.

ALERT began investigating Boakye in early May after a victim was identified.

The survivor was given support resources through ALERT’s Safety Network Co-ordinator and has been able to escape the sex trade, according to the agency.

ALERT’s Human Trafficking unit believes there may be additional victims and are encouraging them to come forward and speak with police. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact local police or CrimeStoppers.

Survivors of human trafficking can call 211 for help.

Boakye is still in custody and is set to appear in court on July 4.

An associate of his was also arrested in connection to this investigation, according to ALERT. Deng Majak Achuil, 28, was wanted on 35 outstanding warrants and was also found to be violating numerous release conditions.

ALERT says he has also been charged with obstruction.
