Road closures, transit detours and more: What to know for Calgary Stampede Parade day

The Calgary Stampede officially begins Friday morning as the parade takes over the downtown core.

Here’s what attendees need to know:

The route

The parade, which will be led by marshal Owen Crow Shoe, will begin at 3 Street SE at 9 a.m. and run west to east before ending at 4 Street SE around 1 p.m.

There is free admission to Stampede Park on parade day.

Road closures

The following roads will be closed starting at 6 a.m. for set up:

  • 6 Street S.E. between 7 Avenue S.E. and 9 Avenue S.E.
  • 5 Street S.E. between 7 Avenue S.E. and 9 Avenue S.E.
  • 6 Avenue S.E. between 3 Street S.E. and 5 Street S.E.
  • 7 Avenue S.E. between 4 Street S.E. and 6 Street S.E.
  • 8 Avenue S.E. between 4 Street S.E. and 6 Street S.E.

The routes below will close at 7:30 a.m.:

  • 9 Avenue S.E. between 8 Street S.E. and 3 Street S.E.
  • 4 Street S.E. between 6 Avenue S.E. and 9 Avenue S.E.
  • 3 Street S.E. between 4 Avenue S.E. and 9 Avenue S.E.
  • Westbound 6 Avenue from 3 Street S.E. to 11 Street S.W.
  • 10 Street S.W. from 6 Avenue S.W. to 9 Avenue S.W.
  • Eastbound 9 Avenue from 11 Street S.W. to 3 Street S.E.
  • The morning connector from Bow Trail to westbound 5 Avenue S.W. will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. only.

The city says all roads are expected to reopen around 2 p.m. for public and pedestrian safety along the route. Vehicles in parkades and residences along those roads won’t be able to leave until the entire parade is finished.

Alternate routes into downtown

  • Eastbound traffic on 9 Avenue will be directed to 11 Street S.W.
  • Motorists are advised to use 5 Avenue or 12 Avenue to bypass the closures.
  • Motorists are encouraged to use Blackfoot Trail, Stoney Trail, Crowchild Trail, 16 Avenue, and Deerfoot Trail as alternate routes into downtown.

Parking lot closures

During the parade, there will be limited access to several Calgary Parking parkades and surface lots along the parade route.

The following parking lot will be closed starting Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until Friday at 3 p.m.:

  • Lot 55, East Village (south half) – (724 – 4 St. S.E.)
    During this time, monthly contract holders of this lot can park at Lot 36 (City Hall) or Lot 62 (Platform Parkade). Note: Calgary Police Services closes both Lot 36 and Lot 62 during the parade. Customers who need to park on Friday, July 5 must do so before 7:30 a.m. and cannot exit the facility until the road re-opens at 2 p.m.

The following parking lots will be closed from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday:

  • Lot 74 (6 a.m. closure) – East Village (656 Confluence Way S.E.)
  • Lot 77 (6 a.m. closure) – East Village (415 – 7 Ave S.E.)
  • Lot 78 (6 a.m. closure) – East Village (424 – 8 Ave S.E.)
  • Lot 79 (6 a.m. closure) – East Village (427 – 8 Ave S.E.)
  • Riverwalk Parkade (6 a.m. closure) – (620 – 6 Ave S.E.)

The following parking lots will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday:

  • Lot 7 (208 – 9 Avenue S.W.)
  • Arts Commons Parkade | Lot 24 (829 Macleod Trail S.E.)
  • City Centre Parkade | Lot 25 (9 Ave access closed, only) – (221 9 Avenue S.W.)
  • City Hall Parkade | Lot 36 (322 – 9 Avenue S.E.)
  • Centennial Parkade | Lot 54 (608 – 9 Avenue S.W.)
  • East Village | Lot 55 (north half) – (724 – 4 Street S.E.)
  • Convention Centre Parkade | Lot 60 (727 – 1 Street S.E.)
  • Lot 61 (701 – 11 Street S.W.)
  • Platform Parkade | Lot 62 (399 – 9 Avenue S.E.)
  • Lot 64 (825 – 11 Street S.W.)
  • Lot 74 – East Village (656 Confluence Way S.E.)
  • Lot 77 – East Village (415 – 7 Avenue S.E.)
  • Lot 78 – East Village (424 – 8 Avenue S.E.)
  • Lot 79 – East Village (427 – 8 Avenue S.E.)
  • Lot 83 (940 – 8 Avenue S.W.)
  • Riverwalk Parkade (620 – 6 Avenue S.E.)
  • The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland (750 – 9 Avenue S.E.)

On-street ParkPlus zones along the parade route will not be accessible during the parade but will be in effect once roads re-open.

Using Calgary Transit

CTrain service runs before, during and after the parade. All downtown CTrain stations are within one block of the parade route. However, there will be some detours on bus routes starting at 7 a.m.

The city says 24-hour CTrain service begins the Thursday evening and ends the morning of Monday, July 15.

  • 14 Avenue S.E. east of 5 Street S.E.
  • South side of Stampede Park, north of 25 Avenue S.E.

Taxi (8 p.m. to 5 a.m.)

  • 12 Avenue S.W. between 1 Street S.E. and 3 Street S.E.

Ride Share – Uber/Lyft (24 hours)

  • 14 Avenue S.W. between Stampede Trail S.W. and 5 Street S.W.
  • South side of Stampede Park, north of 25 Avenue S.E.

Ride Share – Uber/Lyft (8 p.m. to 5 a.m.)

  • 10 Avenue S.E. between 1 Street S.E. and Olympic Way S.E.
  • 1 Street S.E. between 10 Avenue S.E. and 12 Avenue S.E.
