After the Alberta legal aid agreement with the province expired earlier this week, a deal has now been reached to extend the agreement until Sep. 5.
The development came in a Friday afternoon joint news release from the justice minister, Legal Aid Alberta and the Law Society of Alberta.
The release says the agreement will allow the three sides to hash out a new long-term and independent legal aid program. The group says the justice system will continue to operate as usual while negotiations take place.
“Alberta’s government remains committed to ensuring legal aid is available to all Albertans and remains sustainable for the long-term,” reads a statement from the Justice Minister Mickey Amery. “We will continue to engage with Legal Aid Alberta and the Law Society of Alberta to finalize an agreement in the best interest of Albertans.”
Legal Aid Alberta was set to withdraw services as of July 9, after the deal expired.
