2-alarm fire destroys garage, damages home in SE Calgary

A two-alarm fire destroyed a garage and damaged a home in southeast Calgary on Wednesday afternoon.
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to a call just before 3 p.m. in the area of 17 Avenue SE and 36 Street SE in Forest Lawn.
The fire department says the fire broke out in a garage before spreading to a power line and then to a house.
“The fire was upgraded to a second alarm due to the volume of dark smoke visible en route and for additional resources due to the extreme heat,” reads a release from CFD.
Crews arrived to find the flames from the garage and house spreading to neighbouring homes.
Calgary fire spokesperson Carol Henke says the garage where the fire broke out is completely destroyed and the house has significant damage as the “fire quickly worked its way into the attic and through the roof.”
“There is also a fair amount of damage to the neighbouring house and neighbouring garage,” she says.
Nobody was found inside the homes and no injuries have been reported. There was a dog in the house next door, but Henke says he is safe.
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
