Man charged with attempted murder in domestic-related stabbing: Calgary police

A man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder Sunday after a domestic-related stabbing in southeast Calgary sent a woman to hospital, police said.

Officers say they were called to an apartment building on the 300 block of Quarry Way near Quarry Common by neighbours who helped the victim after she ran from the home with multiple stab wounds.

EMS took the woman to hospital in serious condition, while the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle, according to police.

Investigators say they found the man in the Traveller’s Inn on 4611 16 Avenue NW at around 8:30 p.m.

Once police figured out which room he was in, a warrant was issued to enter the premises, they say. The tactical unit then entered the room after “unsuccessful attempted negotiations” and arrested the suspect at 1:35 a.m. Sunday.

Officers say he was taken to hospital for “precautionary measures.”

Geoffrey Stoochnoff, 30, faces a charge of attempted murder, and seven counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release order, including contact with the victim and not to possess weapons of any kind.

Police have the suspect in custody. He is set to appear in court on Thursday, July 18.

“Domestic violence is a complex problem that can only be addressed when everyone in the community works together to end it. Abuse thrives in silence,” police said in a news release.

They provided tips to encourage Calgarians to speak on the issue, which include:

• Learn how you can reach out and support someone you know, or suspect might be in an abusive or violent relationship.
• Be an open and accepting friend if someone discloses their experience with abuse – saying “I believe you” goes a long way.
• Talk to your children about what kinds of behaviours are healthy in a relationship and which ones are not.
• Donate to organizations that work to support families affected by domestic and sexual violence.
• Volunteer with organizations that work to support families affected by domestic and sexual violence.

Lines to call for Calgarians experiencing abuse or violence in intimate or familial relationships include 211, the all-day and week Domestic Violence and Abuse Helpline at 403-234-SAFE (7233), and the Family Violence Info Line at 310-1818, also available every day and night and in over 170 languages from anywhere in Alberta.

Lastly, officers suggest using the Alberta Safety Chat Line from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. if making a phone call isn’t possible.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) says victims of domestic violence can also call CPS by calling the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234, or 9-1-1 if they are in immediate danger.
