Death of man found in SE Calgary alley deemed homicide

Calgary police are investigating the city's ninth homicide of the year following a suspicious death on July 14th.

Police say a the death of a man found in a laneway in southeast Calgary over the weekend has been deemed a homicide.

Emergency crews were called to the 2200 block of 42 Street SE around 4:05 p.m. Sunday for reports that a man was found seriously injured in an alley.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy was done on Wednesday and investigators have identified the victim as 24-year-old Abdoul Madiou Balde. His death is now deemed a homicide.

Following the discovery, police stayed on scene to gather CCTV evidence and speak to potential witnesses. There is no word on any suspects.

“The public plays a crucial role in helping us solve these investigations,” says Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn of the CPS Homicide Unit in a statement. “Regardless of if you believe your information isn’t valuable or assume that police already have it, we want you to come forward.”
