Flight delays, banking disruptions, and more: How the widespread tech outage is impacting Calgary

A software update from cyber-security company CrowdStrike is having a ripple effect on the airline industry, Margot Rubin reports.

A widespread tech outage caused major disruptions in many industries around the world Friday. In Calgary, public transit was affected, as well as flights and banks.

Phone lines at the City of Calgary were also impacted.

The Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Police Service, and Alberta Health Services did not report any issues, and 911 services operated throughout the day.

Staff at both the Peter Lougheed Hospital and Foothills Medical Centre have confirmed systems are running fine. One person at Alberta Children’s Hospital confirmed there were issues on Thursday that have since been resolved.

Some major airlines have been hit with delays, and at Calgary International Airport, there are several Porter and WestJet cancellations listed on the YYC website.

YYC says in a statement to CityNews it has seen minimal impact to its operations.

“We are expecting some delays and cancellations for those airlines impacted by the outage,” the airport authority said. “Our largest airline partners have not been impacted by the outage. Our operations teams are working diligently to support impacted airlines.”

Air Canada says there is no major impact on its operations at this time and WestJet says no direct impacts have been felt on its IT systems or operations as a result of the outage.

Banks are also dealing with technical difficulties that have prevented direct deposit from working for some customers.
