Calgary police are investigating a collision in the city’s southeast Friday night that left a teenager dead.

Investigators say around 11 p.m. on July 19, officers were called to the intersection of 44 Street SE and 14 Avenue SE for reports that a skateboarder was hit by a vehicle.

Police say a 17-year-old boy riding a skateboard crossed 14 Avenue SE and hit an oncoming 2011 GMC Canyon driven by a 75-year-old man.

The driver was going through a green light at the intersection and hit his brakes, but wasn’t able to avoid hitting the teen, police say.

The driver stayed at the scene.

According to investigators, the teenager was taken to hospital with what was believed to be minor injuries, but once he got there the injuries were found to be severe.

Police say he passed in hospital.

Speed is not considered to be a factor in the collision. Investigators are working to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors.

Anyone who saw the collision happen or who has dashcam footage is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or submit tips anonymously through Crimestoppers.
