Four people are dead after a two-vehicle crash on a rural highway east of Calgary on Friday morning.

Emergency crews were called to Highway 564 at Highway 9 in Rocky View County around 10 a.m.

RCMP say a semi-truck hauling a grain trailer that was heading southbound on Highway 9 collided with an SUV that was turning northbound. Both vehicles came to rest in the southeast ditch of the intersection.

All four people in the SUV, a 62-year-old woman from Calgary, 38-year-old man from Calgary, and a man and woman in their early 60s from the Philippines, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 68-year-old man who was behind the wheel of the truck escaped with minor injuries.

Investigators believe the SUV rolled through a stop sign before it collided with the grain truck.

The investigation is still ongoing and police remain at the scene.

The intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 564 was closed for several hours but has since reopened. Motorists are being advised to drive with caution due to the ongoing police presence in the area.
