19-year-old dies in two-vehicle crash: Cochrane RCMP

Cochrane RCMP says a 19-year-old driver is dead after a truck hauling a trailer and a small SUV travelling in the same direction crashed into each other Sunday.

Mounties say a call came in for a serious motor collision at around 1:15 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 22 and Township 281 in Rocky View County.

Police’s initial reports note the truck hauling the trailer and SUV were both travelling north on Hwy 22, and the crash happened because the truck “overcorrected” coming back onto the road from the shoulder.

They say the truck first travelled into the southbound lane and then back to the northbound lane when the SUV collided with the truck’s trailer. The SUV then stopped in the southbound lane.

“The truck and trailer came to rest after striking the guard rail and leaving the road surface going into the ditch,” RCMP said in a news release.

They say the driver of the truck, a 19-year-old man, was pronounced dead on scene.

RCMP say three 26-year-olds from Calgary, two men and a woman, were all treated for non-life-threatening injuries and taken to hospital.

As of 11 a.m. Sunday, Mounties remain on the scene investigating with the collision reconstructionist.

Police say traffic is delayed in the area, but is set to return to normal by late morning on July 28.

Motorists are advised to drive cautiously as the investigation continues, noting lane closures will cause delays.
