Heat warning returns to Calgary

After a brief reprieve, a heat warning as returned to Calgary, with temperatures in the 30s expected for the rest of the week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said early Wednesday daytime temperatures are forecast to be between 29 C and 33 C leading up to and continuing over the August Long Weekend.

“A little bit of an upper ridge sort of poking in from the south helping to bound things up a little bit temperature-wise,” explained ECCC meteorologist Brian Proctor.

ECCC adds that overnight lows between 14 C and 18 C will bring little relief from the heat.

Proctor is forecasting similar conditions for fire crews in the Jasper area.

“The ridge, it’s probably a little bit more unsettled for today up in Jasper today, so the northern mountain parks,” he said. “But in general, a very similar forecast to Calgary, you’re sort of looking at temperatures up in about the 30 C mark right through Saturday before cooling back a little bit.”

Proctor adds the expected cool down this weekend in Calgary won’t be as pronounced as in Jasper.

Residents and visitors to Calgary are asked to take to precautions to protect themselves and others from the heat during high temperatures

This can include rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day, taking breaks from the heat often and spending time in indoor, cooled spaces when possible, and drinking plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.

Infants, children, seniors and people with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, and outdoor works are especially vulnerable in hot weather.
