Construction in Calgary’s Culture and Entertainment District to cause Long Weekend traffic, transit disruptions

After pausing work for this year’s Stampede, construction is starting again in Calgary’s Culture + Entertainment District.

This means Calgarians can expect lots of closures and detours to facilitate construction on several major projects across The C + E.

This August Long Weekend there will be closures at Victoria Park/Stampede Station, the city says.

This is due to contruction on the 17 Avenue SE Extension and Victoria Park/Stampede Station rebuild project which will impact service on the CTrain, close a lane on Macleod Trail, and create detours for pedestrians. The city says people attending events on Stampede Park over the long weekend should give themselves extra time to get where they need to go.

Starting Friday, Aug. 2 at 8 p.m. through Saturday, Aug. 3 at 2 a.m., single-track CTrain service will be in effect at Victoria Park/Stampede Station.

Starting Saturday, Aug. 3 at 2 a.m. through Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 4 a.m., Victoria Park/Stampede Station and Erlton/Stampede Station will be closed for construction of the 17 Avenue SE extension rebuild project.

Replacement shuttle service will run between City Hall/Bow Valley College Station and 39 Avenue Station to accomodate riders.

The Macleod Trail pedestrian crossings at 13 Avenue SE, 14 Avenue SE, and 17 Avenue SE will be closed during this time.

Pedestrians and cyclists looking for access to Stampede Park should detour to 12 Avenue SE or 25 Avenue SE.

The right-hand lane on northbound Macleod Trail will also be closed between 13 Avenue SE and 17 Avenue SE, but two northbound lanes will be open at all times.

Ongoing construction in The C + E

Development continuing in the C + E through August is also going to result in some pedestrian and vehicle detours.

Included in these disruptions is intermittent single-track CTrain service at Victoria Park/Stampede Station.

Enabling works for the new event centre, Scotia Place, are also starting at the site of the new building; 5A Street SE has opened to facilitate north/south travel with the closure of 5 Street SE. Parking lots 14 and 20 are also now closed.

ENMAX utilities work related to the Green Line is also scheduled to continue through the summer prompting lane restrictions along 10 Avenue SE (west of 3 Street SE). 3 Street SE (between 11 and 12 Avenue). 11 Avenue SE (between Olympic Way/4 Street and 6 Street), 12 Avenue SE and 6 Street SE.
